Auckland Early Childhood Teachers Relief Pool

TeachNZ has established an Auckland Early Childhood Teachers Relief Pool to help ease the shortage of qualified and registered ECE teachers in the Auckland region. The specific purpose of the pool is to support centres during periods when staff are studying towards a recognised early childhood qualification and are on practicum.

Relieving teachers must hold the Diploma of Teaching (ECE) or equivalent (see Appendix 1 below) and have current registration with the New Zealand Teachers Council. Registration includes either provisional registration, subject to confirmation or have submitted an application for provisional registration to the Council.

The rate of pay offered to early childhood teachers who join the pool will be equivalent to the first step on the salary scale for kindergarten relief teachers who now have pay parity with primary teachers.

Free accommodation is provided for, and depending on your placement will be either a bed and breakfast, motel or an apartment. Alternatively, private boarding costs will be considered.

If you’re living in New Zealand/Australia, your travel costs to Auckland will be reimbursed. Daily mileage to and from the early childhood centre will also be reimbursed.

Appendix 1
The following types of qualifications are acceptable for the purposes of this project (these are the same qualifications accepted by the ECE funding system and the ECE regulatory system):

• a three-year early childhood education teaching qualifications (for example Diploma of Teaching (ECE) or Bachelor of Teaching (ECE)), approved by the New Zealand Teachers Council. [Refer to the TeachNZ website for a list of approved qualifications currently being offered]. This bullet point is to be interpreted to be inclusive of Graduate Diploma of Teaching (ECE) qualifications which are offered by certain providers to skill primary qualified teachers in ECE teaching; OR

• a New Zealand qualification or qualifications held to be equivalent to a Diploma of Teaching (ECE) as a result of an application to the New Zealand Qualifications Authority prior to 1 January 1995; OR

• an overseas early childhood education teaching qualification assessed by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority as being equivalent to the first bullet point above; OR

• a New Zealand Free Kindergarten Diploma.
