A Secondary Senior Manager’s Sabbatical Award is a period of 10 school weeks’ leave available to a senior manager as part of their career pathway. Leave is provided to engage in professional learning activities.
From the 2012 round onwards there will be 10 awards available to senior managers, in state or state-integrated secondary schools, covered by the Secondary Teachers' Collective Agreement (STCA).
A senior manager is defined as a teacher who holds the position of ‘Assistant Principal’ or ‘Deputy Principal’. These terms are defined by role and not necessarily title. Please see clause 4.3B.2 of the STCA or the award guidelines for further information.
The award recipient receives their normal salary from the school while on leave. The award funds relief costs to the school, in accordance with the STCA, for the duration of sabbatical leave.

Each application is assessed by a selection panel composed of representatives from the Post Primary Teachers’ Association, New Zealand School Trustees Association and the Ministry of Education.
Applications are ranked on the quality of the proposal provided by each applicant and how well they address the selection criteria and selection factors. The professional learning activity to be completed must also be within an approved field. For more information please see the award guidelines.
