Finding a job

Steve PerksIt is important to note that in New Zealand, schools and early childhood services are responsible for employing their own staff.  There is no central staffing agency and no government department responsible for staff placement.  All applications should therefore be made to the employing school or early childhood service.

All vacancies are advertised in the official publication The New Zealand Education Gazette or you can visit the Education Gazette online.  There is a search engine which makes it possible to search by subject and geographic region (and you can subscribe to be notified of vacancies meeting your criteria).

You can either apply directly to schools in response to advertised positions or work through one of the Ministry of Education preferred teacher recruitment agents.

While there are vacancies throughout the year, most vacancies occur between September and January for the new school year, of four 10-week terms, which starts in early February.

The Education Review Office reviews all schools and early childhood services in New Zealand within a specified period and is a useful reference for New Zealand schools’ and services' performances.
