Thinking of becoming a teacher

Lorraine Manuela, ECE teacher. New Zealand needs dynamic and enthusiastic teachers who enjoy working with young people – whether it is at the early childhood, primary or secondary level.

Teaching is a challenging job, the pay and conditions are competitive and the rewards are enormous. It is a profession which helps you gain people and management skills and allows you to work in an environment where you can really make a difference.

You may not yet have decided what type of teaching is for you, so TeachNZ has set out as much information as possible to help your decision making. Check out our comprehensive information in the three teaching sectors - early childhood (ECE), primary and secondary - and their current opportunities.  You will also find information such as the type of qualifications required, where you can study these, and what support may be available to you while you’re studying.

For Māori and Pasifika people thinking of becoming teachers, we’ve included another option for exploring pathways to a teaching career.
Kelly Albert, primary teacher. Kane Raukura, chemistry teacher.
