Opportunities in teaching
Well-qualified, enthusiastic teachers are always sought after by our schools and early childhood services. From time to time there are more opportunities in some teaching sectors than others - for instance, more male teachers are needed in early childhood and primary classrooms. We’ve summarised where other opportunities also currently lie:
- Early childhood teachers - new professional registration requirements for early childhood teachers in New Zealand are also placing pressure on numbers in many parts of the country, and in particular the Auckland region. In addition, 2007 saw the highest number of births recorded in New Zealand for 44 years which will mean more early childhood teachers will be required in the next few years.
- Primary teachers - currently opportunities are greatest in the Auckland region where an increasing population is placing pressure on all teaching sectors. The recent Government announcement regarding increased primary staffing levels will mean more employment opportunities for primary teachers in the near future. In addition, 2007 saw the highest number of births recorded in New Zealand since 1972, which will lead to an increased demand for teachers by 2012. Ministry of Education officials now expect to see 70,000 more pupils in classrooms during the next 15 years than previously predicted.
- Secondary teachers of maths, physics, chemistry, te reo Māori and technology are in particular demand. There is an ongoing need for experienced, well-qualified teachers in all subjects and middle and senior managers.
- Special education teachers - qualified, experienced teachers of children with learning or behavioural issues, and those working with children with physical disabilities, are sought after.
- Auckland - with its rapidly increasing population Auckland is experiencing teacher supply pressure in many primary and secondary schools and early childhood services.
