Janene Pickering
Primary Teacher
Janene is excited about the future of education. “It is becoming more child centred. Education is making more room for the arts, which are so important for children’s learning. I am a facilitator of children’s learning; not just a teacher.”
Janene has been teaching for four years now. Her previous job history is varied and interesting. She’s been a chef, a postie and a sports administrator.
Janene originally studied to achieve her Diploma of Applied Sports Studies before leaving the country for her OE.
Janene had wondered about being a teacher for a long time but didn’t believe she would make it through the selection process. When she eventually returned to New Zealand, her sister presented her with application forms for the Auckland College of Education. Janene admits that without her sister’s coercion, she would never have considered what has turned out to be the best career move of her life. She was accepted into the Bachelor of Education programme and was quickly assured that she was on the right path.
Janene speaks honestly about the high levels of hard work that are required from her in the classroom each day, “but the rewards and potential for making real changes in the children’s lives make it all worthwhile.” She enjoys the excitement of seeing progress in individuals and says that teaching is never boring; its versatility and variety strongly appeal to her.
“There is a challenge in locating learning opportunities in children’s minds and lives - I love finding out what makes them tick.”
“I am a learner myself.” Many things impact my life and my learning and I have quickly realised that it’s no different with children. I have the opportunity to influence their personal growth – and that is an important role!”
Janene talks about why the children in her class inspire her to be a better teacher through their ability to identify the really important things in life. “The way they see the world so innocently, and simply, is encouraging for adults to be around!”
She also enjoys working alongside staff who love their job and work well as a team. “This motivates me to come to school each day. This differs from all of the other jobs I held prior to teaching – I’m experiencing a brand new job satisfaction and loving it!”
