Qualified teacher returning

If you are a qualified teacher returning to primary teaching, you have several options depending upon how long it is since you last taught:

  • Find a job through the Education Gazette or EdGazette online or through Ministry-approved recruitment agents
  • Update your qualification from a diploma to a degree
  • Contact your local teacher education provider to find out about retraining courses if you’ve been out of teaching for some years

You may need retraining to bring yourself up to date with curriculum developments and other changes. Retraining courses funded by the Ministry of Education are offered free through a range of providers.  From July 2007 the following providers are offering retraining courses:  University of Auckland for primary and secondary teachers, University of Waikato for secondary teachers at two locations - Hamilton and by flexible delivery which will take primary teachers.  Contact your nearest primary teacher education provider to discuss programmes they have planned or to place your name on a list of interested participants.

Teachers completing programmes of further education funded by the Ministry of Education are given the same allowances as beginning teachers and qualified teachers when they return to the classroom.

Our Returning teachers section has useful information for New Zealand teachers considering a return to the classroom.
