Employment
While New Zealand always needs high-quality, well-educated teachers, the job market is particularly buoyant for secondary teachers of specific subjects - maths, physics, chemistry, technology and te reo Māori.
There are a number of ways you can find a teaching position:
- You can apply directly to schools which are advertising vacancies. Vacancies can be found in the Education Gazette or the Education Gazette Online, and are continuously updated.
- Or you can work through recruitment agencies the Ministry of Education has approved.
The change from student teacher to teacher can be demanding which is why new teachers are well supported. Under the Beginning Teacher Allowance first year teachers are given time out of the classroom per week for advice and guidance purposes. In their second year, time out from the classroom is also granted but for a lesser period. The school board is responsible for applying for the allowance on the teacher's behalf.
