Qualified teacher returning
If you are a qualified teacher returning to secondary teaching, depending on how long it is since you last taught, you can choose from several options to return to teaching:
- Find a job through Education Gazette or EdGazette online
- Complete a teacher retraining course if you have been away from teaching for a reasonable length of time – inquire at your local teacher education provider
- Update your teaching qualifications if they are from a long time ago.
Many teachers return to teaching straight after a short break. However if you have been out of the classroom for some time you may need some retraining to update on curriculum developments and other changes. Retraining courses funded by the Ministry of Education are offered free through a range of providers. From July 2007 the following providers are offering retraining courses: University of Auckland for primary and secondary teachers, University of Waikato for secondary teachers at two locations - Hamilton and by flexible delivery which will take primary teachers. Massey University and the University of Canterbury are also offering secondary retraining courses. Contact your nearest secondary teacher education provider to discuss programmes they have planned, or place your name on a list of interested participants.
Teachers completing programmes of further education funded by the Ministry of Education are given the same allowances as beginning teachers and qualified teachers when they return to the classroom. See below for more information on these allowances.
Our Returning teachers section has more information for New Zealand teachers considering a return to the classroom.
