Christchurch Teacher Retraining

Published on

If you're a teacher working in a permanent role in the Christchurch, Waimakariri or Selwyn districts, and your position has been made surplus to requirements, the Christchurch Surplus Staffing Retraining Fund may be an opportunity for you.

The Christchurch Surplus Staffing Retraining Fund will provide you with time, space, and financial support to help you study towards a qualification if you are looking at retraining as your surplus staffing option.

The following information outlines the teacher retraining provisions.

Teacher Retraining Provisions

The retraining course* must be approved by the Secretary for Education. Course approval is considered on a case-by-case basis, recognising the experience, interests and career progression of each teacher. However, in general the following criteria must be met before approval will be granted. The course must be:

  • Tertiary level equivalent, that is NZQA Level 7 or above.
  • Provided by an NZQA accredited provider.
  • Full time or the equivalent of the teaching role.
  • An enhancement or upgrade of teaching skills. This means that the course must focus on classroom practice and/or school management.
  • Additional to an initial teaching qualification.
*May include more than one course in a year of study
