Early Childhood Education

The Government has invested $4 million to boost Early Childhood Education (ECE) teacher supply.

This package is for licensed early childhood services that are required to employ qualified teachers; and qualified registered teachers from overseas, including New Zealand trained teachers, accepting employment in these services.

Qualified and registered ECE teachers are teachers who hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in ECE teaching or the equivalent as assessed by NZQA and are registered and certificated (or provisionally certificated) by the Teaching Council.

The package will include:

  • the release of targeted marketing campaigns to attract people into ECE as a career;
  • the commencement of a recruitment campaign targeted at overseas trained ECE teachers wanting to move to New Zealand to teach; and New Zealand trained ECE teachers wanting to return home to teach;
  • the introduction of a Relocation Support Grant (RSG) to assist with the actual and reasonable costs associated with relocation

Detailed information on the initiatives including application processes will be available soon.

Effective 16 September 2019, licensed early childhood services can contact Education Personnel and Randstad Education to help them recruit overseas trained early childhood teachers. Their services are free to overseas trained ECE teachers and to licensed early childhood services.
