Early Childhood Education

The Government has invested $4 million to boost Early Childhood Education (ECE) teacher supply.

This package is for licensed early childhood services that are required to employ qualified teachers; and qualified registered teachers from overseas, including New Zealand trained teachers, accepting employment in these services.

Qualified and registered ECE teachers are teachers who hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in ECE teaching or the equivalent as assessed by NZQA and are registered and certificated (or provisionally certificated) by the Teaching Council.

The package includes:

  • targeted marketing campaigns to attract people into ECE as a career;
  • a recruitment campaign targeted at overseas trained ECE teachers wanting to move to New Zealand to teach; and New Zealand trained ECE teachers wanting to return home to teach;
  • a Relocation Support Grant (RSG) to assist with the actual and reasonable costs associated with relocation.
