Strict border restrictions remain in place in New Zealand during Alert Level 1 and the threshold to qualify for an exemption to these restrictions is very high, with narrow categories for exemptions. We do not expect these to change in the short-term. To keep up to date with the latest information on New Zealand’s border restrictions, we recommend viewing the latest updates at https://www.immigration.govt.nz.
We know international teachers can make a big contribution to the number of teachers available to work in New Zealand.
New Zealand schools are able to recruit an overseas teacher when they cannot find a suitable candidate at home. They must provide proof that they have made genuine attempts to look locally for each teacher they need.
To make it more efficient for overseas teachers to work in New Zealand, a number of overseas teaching qualifications have been pre-approved, meaning they don’t need an International Qualifications Assessment (IQA) from NZQA comparing the qualification to those listed on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework.
Applications from teachers with pre-approved qualifications may be fast-tracked through NZQA and Education Council processes, saving $745 in costs.
