2021 Scholarships Opening Soon
Our scholarships support you on your journey towards being a great teacher or kaiako. We can cover the cost of your course fees and pay you an allowance throughout the duration of your study.
You will be able to apply for a 2021 TeachNZ scholarship from 24th August 2020.
If you are planning on enrolling, or are already enrolled on, an approved Initial Teacher Education course - you are eligible for one of our five scholarships.
Whether you are a graduate or undergraduate, a school leaver or a career changer, have the passion to teach early childhood, primary, secondary or in immersion settings; there are great choices available for you.
The table below outlines the scholarships available this year – they cover early childhood, primary, secondary and immersion settings.
To apply for a scholarship you must complete an online application form. It will be made available on this page when the upcoming application round opens.
You can apply for as many scholarships as you wish, but only accept one. Part time options are available. If you have previously completed Initial Teacher Education training and/or received a TeachNZ Scholarship, you are not eligible for any of the scholarships available.
Approved teaching qualifications are determined by the Teaching Council. They may be updated throughout the duration of the year. To find out which Initial Teacher Education courses are considered approved, please check the scholarship guide. If you believe you are enrolled on a course that should be considered approved for this scholarship, please contact a member of the TeachNZ team.
There are three application rounds to ensure you have the greatest opportunity to apply - and reapply if you are unsuccessful. You must submit your application on or before the application round closing date. If you submit an eligible application, it will be assessed by an independent panel of education experts. You will be notified if your application has been successful or unsuccessful on the application round notification date. Depending on circumstances, the notification dates may be brought forward or extended. TeachNZ will contact you should this be the case.
Due to the demand of the Te Huawhiti Career Changer, Te Huarau and Kupe scholarships, there is an expectation that the third application round will only be open to applicants with mid-year enrolments starting their first year of study.
We appreciate that completing the application form can be a challenging task. We have a team on hand and more information across our website and in our scholarship guide, to make sure you hand in the strongest application you can.

They reflect on how applicants express their relationship and engagement skills, communication skills, leadership, motivations to teach and cultural capabilities. As well as judging an application on these merits, the assessment panel also consider how an application aligns with the aims of the scholarship programme.
