Bonding Requirements

If you receive a TeachNZ Scholarship, to pay back public funding, you are required to teach in a New Zealand licensed ECE centre, state or state-integrated schools for a stipulated time after you graduate. This is what we call a ‘bond period.’

Depending on the type of scholarship awarded, teaching requirements will vary. Please contact us for information regarding your individual teaching requirements, which can also be found in your terms and conditions and bonding conditions letter.

Please see the guidelines below for the years you are bonded to teach, depending on your scholarship type.

Your ‘Bond Period’ starts on the first day of the month following completion of your teaching qualification. For example, if you completed study on 15 November 2020, your ‘Bond Period’ would start on 1 December 2020.

*If you think your bonding dates are incorrect, please contact us with confirmation of your qualification completion date and we can adjust the dates accordingly.

Guidelines for bonding length

Career Changer scholarship:

  • Two years for every one year the scholarship was awarded for;
  • One year awarded: bonded for two years in the following four after completing your qualification.
  • Three years awarded: bonded for six years in the following ten after completing your qualification.

All non-Career Changer scholarships:

Less than one year awarded and NO allowance received: bonded for one year in the following three after completing your qualification.

  • One year awarded: bonded for two years in the following four after completing your qualification.
  • Two years awarded: bonded for two years in the following four after completing your qualification.
  • Three years awarded: bonded for three years in the following five after completing your qualification.
  • Four years awarded: bonded for four years in the following six after completing your qualification.

If you do not meet the teaching requirements for the scholarship before your bonding deadline, you will be required to repay all or a portion of all funds (fees and allowances) received during the scholarship.

Please contact us if you have not been teaching, do not think you will complete the required teaching before your bonding deadline date, or are teaching outside of your bonding conditions.

Note – Work in a private school cannot be counted towards your bonding obligations.

Once you have completed the required bonding time within your bonding period, we shall send you a letter to the postal address we have on file. You must make sure the contact details we hold for you are accurate and up to date so you do not miss any important information regarding your scholarship.

ECE Scholarship Bonding

To evidence teaching you have completed towards an ECE scholarship, download the bonding form from the right hand side of this page. Print both pages of the bonding form and ask your employer to complete it.

Return the completed form by email to teachnz.admin@education.govt.nz.

Please ensure your full name and TeachNZ Scholarship ID is written on your form. There is also a box for you to provide any updates to your personal or contact details.

Primary and Secondary Bonding

If you are currently in the bonding period of your TeachNZ Primary or Secondary Scholarship we shall be checking the internal payroll system for work completed. Please email us at any point for an update on teaching evidenced at teachnz.bonding@education.govt.nz.
