The information below applies to the 2019 TeachNZ Māori Medium Primary Career Changer Scholarships.

Māori Medium Primary Career Changer Scholarships are for people wanting to teach in bilingual and total immersion classes in primary schools.

They provide financial assistance so the loss of income you experience while studying is not a barrier to obtaining a teaching qualification.

These scholarships are also available for people who are not qualified teachers but are currently working in a school either teaching te reo Māori; as a specialist Māori language teacher such as a kaiārahi reo teacher; or who have Limited Authority to Teach in a Māori-medium school.

These scholarships are for people enrolling into their first year of an approved Māori-medium teacher education qualification commencing at the start of the 2019 academic year.

 Applicants must:

  • be a New Zealand citizen, permanent resident resident of at least three years
  • be changing career to become a qualified teacher, or have Limited Authority to Teacher
  • have applied to enrol into an approved Graduate Diploma/Master of Secondary Teaching
  • have proficiency in te reo Māori to a level that meets the requirements of the tertiary provider
  • have leadership experience
  • have support from iwi and/or Māori leaders in the community.
