Applying for registration and certification

The Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand (Teaching Council) is responsible for teacher registration and certification. You can apply for  registration and provisional certification as soon as you've graduated. When you first apply for registration, you’ll be granted registration and a provisional practising certificate that expires after three years.

This practising certificate is designed to be held for a maximum of five years. You are expected to complete induction and mentoring and gain Tūturu | Full (Category One) within this timeframe.. If you are unable to meet the requirements for a full practising certificate in the six year timeframe then you will likely need to complete a Teacher Education Refresh (TER) programme in order to receive a further provisional practising certificate. More information on the TER programme can be found on the Teaching Council’s website.
