Essential Skills

In order to be an effective teacher in New Zealand, you must have a commitment to, and understanding of, the importance of Māori and Pasifika language, culture and identity.

As a teacher you will be involved in creating an education system that supports all young people to excel, whatever education pathway they choose. You will recognise their aspirations, nurture their talents, and share in their expectations of success. You will appreciate their differences, and seek ways to create a culture of respect and understanding in your classroom.

Teachers and whānau believe, and research tells us, that young people do best when their families and whānau are actively involved in their schools. So as a teacher you will come into daily contact with people from a range of cultures and all walks of life. That is the beauty of teaching. It is an opportunity to learn as much as to teach, and to give something back to the community you live in. In doing so, you will demonstrate that educational success is real and achievable for everybody.
