Returning to Teaching

New Zealand has recently seen some significant changes to teacher supply and demand – and if you’re qualified but no longer teaching, now is a great time to consider returning to the sector.

In New Zealand, there is now high demand for teachers in certain subjects, such as secondary teachers of the Sciences, Technology and Mathematics subjects, and locations, such as the Auckland region.

There is also still a shortage of highly qualified secondary teachers of Te Reo Māori, and teachers in Māori-medium settings. Additionally, teachers are in demand for relief (‘supply’) teaching.

Support for returning to teaching

A recently announced Teacher Supply package was announced to support more teachers into the classrooms for 2018 and 2019.  For more information, go to the Teacher Supply Package section.

We hope you’ll continue to consider returning to teaching. You can find out more about teaching opportunities in New Zealand and get updates on the current teacher labour market from the New Zealand Education Gazette, or talk to one of our Ministry of Education Preferred Teacher Recruiters.
