We know international teachers can make a big contribution to the number of teachers available to work in New Zealand.
New Zealand schools are able to recruit an overseas teacher when they cannot find a suitable candidate at home. They must provide proof that they have made genuine attempts to look locally for each teacher they need.
To make it more efficient for overseas teachers to work in New Zealand, a number of overseas teaching qualifications have been pre-approved, meaning they don’t need an International Qualifications Assessment (IQA) comparing the qualification to those listed on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework.
If a person holds an overseas qualification on the pre-approved qualifications list they are unlikely to have to apply for an International Qualifications Assessment for registration purposes and can apply directly to the Education Council.
